From marketing idea to ‘Smurf Turf’: How Boise State’s blue field came to be

By Dan Day, BoiseDev: Mention Boise or Idaho to someone from out of the area and a few things probably come up. First, potatoes, obviously. But after that, people all over the world often know about another Idaho icon: the blue turf.

The famous carpet inside the stadium on campus at Boise State dates to the summer of 1986. A stadium has stood on the site since 1940 – the current structure is actually the third stadium, and dates back to 1970. But for the first 45 years, the grass was, well… grass colored.
