As a voter for the Pac-12 Players of the Week, my choices may occasionally differ from the official selections.
Either way, I want to share my picks and give brief explanations of why I voted the way I did for the Freshman and Player of the Week.
My tweeted picks and summaries appear below.
Normally I don’t vote for players on a team that lost, but I went with Washington State’s Mouhamed Gueye as the Pac-12 Player of the Week. The quality of competition matters and he put up numbers.

I voted for Cal’s Grant Newell as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.

Player of the Week — Mouhamed Gueye, Washington State

My Player of the Week vote came down to Mouhamed Gueye and Azuolas Tubelis. I went with Gueye because his production was against higher-quality opponents.
The Washington State big posted two double-doubles in the Diamond Head Classic over a three-day stretch. He scored 22 against Utah State with 12 rebounds and 21 against George Washington with 10 rebounds.
Freshman Player of the Week — Grant Newell, Cal

Only three players were nominated for the Freshman Player of the Week and I gave the nod to Grant Newell over Adem Bona.
Helping to secure the Bears’ first win of the season with nine points and three assists against UT Arlington, I felt the Cal freshman was worthy of the vote.
Newell’s 24 minutes played was fifth on the team and his contributions make a difference.
