Vilardo: 2023 Week 8 SuperWest Football Power Rankings

After last week's games involving the Pac-12, Mountain West & BYU, we see how they stack up

  By Stephen Vilardo, SuperWest Sports

Following another week of football for the 25 SuperWest teams from the Pac-12, Mountain West, and BYU, it’s time to see how they stack up.

As always, these updated Power Rankings look at where each team stands at this moment in time. They are likely to fluctuate from week to week as some squads get hot and others struggle through slumps.

Here’s is a look at where each team heading into Week 8.

Washington football pac-12

1. Washington (6-0, 3-1) ▲1
Washington has now won 13 straight games, the second-longest active streak in the nation.

The Huskies are burying teams in the first half this season with a 173-55 edge in the opening 30 minutes.

UW is 6-0 to start a season for the first time since 2017.

Oregon Ducks Logo Pac-12

2. Oregon (5-1, 2-1) ▼1
Oregon had their chance to win in Seattle last week. Some questionable decisions may have done in the Ducks, but they had a chance to win in the end.

The Ducks lead the nation in scoring offense at 45.8 and are 11th nationally in scoring defense.

I think we’ll see Oregon vs. the Huskies one more time this season.

3. Air Force (6-0, 4-0) ▲1
Air Force has won eleven straight games, the fourth-longest streak in the nation. The last time Air Force was 6-0 to start a season was 2002.

The Falcons got to 6-0 with a win over a very good Wyoming team. I have a feeling we could see that matchup in the Conference Championship Game.

The real question at that time might be whether or not the Falcons can cap off an unbeaten regular season.

4. Oregon State (6-1, 3-1) ▲1
Oregon State beat UCLA 36-24 as the Beaver defense stepped up.

OSU allowed some yardage to the Bruins but also finished things off with three interceptions of Dante Moore.

Oregon State still has games left with Washington and Oregon, and despite the loss earlier in the season, the Beavers have control of their own fate.

5. USC (6-1, 4-0) ▼2
USC got outplayed in every facet of the game against Notre Dame. The Trojans turned the ball over five times in the loss and the defense played on a short field throughout.

The defense is not creating takeaways as they have just forced eight on the season and have just two takeaways in the last three games.

USC is still unbeaten in Pac-12 play, so and all is certainly not lost, but the Trojans need more.

6. Utah (5-1, 2-1) ▲2
The Utes were still without Cam Rising last week but the offense had their best outing of the season by far.

Utah went for 445 yards of offense, including 317 yards on the ground. Both of those figures were their highest of the season as they won for the 18th straight time at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

That 18-game home win streak is the third-longest active streak in the nation.

7. Wyoming (5-2, 2-1) ◄►
The Cowboys fell to Air Force in Colorado Springs in their first conference loss of the season.

It was the middle game of a three-game stretch that began with Fresno State and will end with Boise State after the bye this week.

The Cowboys certainly missed Harrison Waylee against the Falcons, but Andrew Peasley kept Wyoming in it. We can likely look forward to the rematch of that one in the MW Championship game.

8. Fresno State (6-1, 2-1) ▲2
Fresno State rebounded with a win against Utah State last Friday night.

The Bulldogs got the ground game going in a big way against the Aggies as they ran it for a season-high 151 yards. Logan Fife filled in for the injured Mikey Keene and delivered a win.

Fife is no stranger to that role, reprising it from last season when he had to step in for an injured Jake Haener.

9. UCLA (4-2, 1-2) ▼3
The UCLA defense has carried the Bruins the last few weeks as the offense has struggled.

The offense once again turned the ball over against Oregon State. That was too much for the Bruins to overcome.

Dante Moore looked like a freshman in the loss, despite his abundance of talent.

Arizona football Pac-12

10. Arizona (4-3, 2-2) ▲2
Arizona is 33rd in the nation in total defense this season, allowing just 332.9 yards per game.

And let’s remember, the Wildcats have played both USC and Washington, which feature two of the nation’s most prolific offenses.

The 44-6 win at Washington State was pure dominance by the Wildcats. With the victory, Arizona has now had road wins over ranked opponents in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1997 and 1998.

11. Washington State (4-2, 1-2) ▼2
Just a couple of games ago Washington State was the fourth-highest-scoring offense in the nation, averaging over 40 points per game.

But after losses to UCLA and Arizona the Cougars are now 31st in the nation in scoring and the average has fallen 34.3 points per contest.

The last two games have seen WSU average just 11.5 points per game while turning it over seven times with a turnover margin of -5.

12. UNLV (5-1, 2-0) ▲2
UNLV has scored at least 40 points in each of their last four games.

All four of those games have resulted in wins giving the Rebels their first four-game win streak since Randall Cunningham was slinging the ball for them in 1984.

The Rebels have scored at least 40 points in every game except the loss at Michigan.

13. BYU (4-2, 1-2) ▼2
BYU got flat out boat raced in Fort Worth last week. The Horned Frogs were able to do anything they wanted to against the Cougars in the 44-11 win.

BYU was outgained by 341 yards on the day and TCU averaged 6.8 yards per play compared to just 3.7 for the Cougars.

A chance to remain perfect at home in the Big 12 awaits this week with a visit from Texas Tech.

14. Colorado State (3-3, 1-1) ▲4
Colorado State is 29th in the nation this season with just 1.5 sacks allowed per game. Last season the Rams gave up more sacks than any team in the nation.

CSU could be looking at a 4-2 start to the season if not for the collapse in Boulder.

Tory Horton continues to put up big numbers for CSU as he is sixth in the nation with 115.0 receiving yards per game. His 9.7 catches per game currently ranks second in the country.

15. Boise State (3-4, 2-1) ◄►
Boise State is back below .500 after the stunning loss to Colorado State.

The Broncos held a 30-10 lead with four minutes to play and ended up with the L. The problems for BSU started prior to the last four minutes of the game, however.

The Broncos gave up 330 yards of offense in the second half alone.

16. Cal (3-4, 1-3) ◄►
Cal got some things figured out on offense against Oregon State.

Against Utah, the Bears lost some of that momentum on offense but may have finally found their QB in Fernando Mendoza.

If Mendoza proves to be the answer at QB that Cal has been looking for the season could be salvaged.

17. Colorado (4-3, 1-3) ▼4
Last week I wrote that Colorado’s push to win six games and become bowl-eligible almost took a drastic nosedive against Arizona State.

This time the Buffs took that nosedive against Stanford in dramatic fashion. Colorado squandered a 29-0 lead and fell at home to the Cardinal.

The Buffaloes still have a long way to go until they are an elite program. The progress is there but the final destination remains off in the distance.

18. Utah State (3-4, 1-2) ▼1
Utah State has been outscored 91-17 in the first quarter this season. Last week, things were better in the opening quarter with the score tied 7-7 vs. Fresno State.

The Aggies’ offense has been clicking the last two weeks averaging 603.5 yards per game. On the season the Aggies have the 15th best offense in the nation, collecting 477.9 yards per outing.

19. San Diego State (3-4, 1-2) ◄►
San Diego State was able to end their four-game losing streak with a seven-point win over Hawai’i.

The Aztecs were able to run the ball for 157 yards at Hawaii, an improvement as they had only averaged a hair over 100 yards per game in their four prior games.

Hawai’i has not been good against the run so the jury is still out as to whether the Aztecs have improved that much.

20. San Jose State (2-5, 1-2) ▲2
San Jose State came away with a win over New Mexico, and a much-needed one at that.

The schedule has been tough so far, but the results have not been there for a team that has a good deal of talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

The Spartans have taken care of the ball this season, ranking 17th in the nation with a turnover margin of +6 on the season, and their four turnovers committed this season ranks as the eighth-best mark in America.

21. Stanford (2-4, 1-3) ▲3
Last week I asked if it was the week for the Cardinal to pick up their final win ever in the Pac-12.

If it turns out that is the last conference game Stanford ever wins it was a good one to go out on. Stanford erased a 29-0 halftime deficit and Elik Ayomanor had himself a career game in the second half.

This win was a huge one as Troy Taylor builds the program’s foundation.

22. Hawai’i (2-5, 0-2) ▼2
Hawai’i is a better team this season and it starts with QB play. Brayden Schager has been phenomenal this season for the Rainbow Warriors.

Schager has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of his last 16 games, which is currently the sixth-longest streak nationally.

He has thrown for over 300 yards in each game this season as Timmy Chang’s offense is starting to take shape.

23. Arizona State (1-5, 0-3) ▼2
Arizona State has a rough stretch to end the season. The final six games will be a gauntlet for Kenny Dillingham and his squad.

The Sun Devils are building a program and that is going to take time.

ASU has looked better in recent games, but the results have still been the same.

24. New Mexico (2-4, 0-2) ▼1
New Mexico has lost its last 14 Mountain West games, the longest conference losing streak in the nation.

The Lobos took a lead into the locker room against San Jose State before falling in the second half.

Big plays have doomed New Mexico as opponents have torched them with 17 plays of 30+ yards this season.

25. Nevada (0-6, 0-2) ◄►
Nevada has lost 16-straight games, the longest active streak in the nation.

And for what it’s worth, that streak is double the next closest to them.

The Wolf Pack are still searching for their first win since September 3, 2022. San Diego State is the next opponent, and the streak will most likely reach 17 after this week.
