1. Alabama (9-0)
2. Notre Dame (10-0)
3. Clemson (9-1)
4. Ohio State (5-0)
5. Texas A&M (7-1)
6. Indiana (6-1)
7. USC (5-0)
I know the Trojans haven’t shown a ton, but they’re an undefeated USC team that has won five games and faced a schedule that this year seems pretty comparable to what I presume CFP lock Ohio State has. USC just needs to keep winning the games in front of them. It would have really helped them had Washington or Oregon gone undefeated to set up a ranked showdown in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Still, the Trojans just need to win and will likely be looking to stretch out the difference if they get the chance to make a Hail Mary statement for the CFP committee. Do we really think Cincinnati deserves to be ranked ahead of USC just because they’ve played three more games?
8. Cincinnati (8-0)
9. Florida (8-2)
10. Georgia (7-2)
11. Iowa State (8-2)
12. Oklahoma (7-2)
13. Northwestern (6-1)
14. Iowa (6-2)
15. North Carolina (6-3)
16. Miami (8-2)
17. Texas (6-3)
18. Oklahoma St (7-3)
19. NC State (8-3)
20. Washington (3-1)
Go back to my USC/Cincinnati reasoning. Do teams like BYU and Coastal Carolina deserve to be ranked ahead of a 3-1 Washington team? I don’t think so, and I think the Huskies and the Pac-12 teams in this second pack could all go toe-to-toe easily with all but about four or five teams in the nation. It’s more about the lack of games they have been able to play. Washington is solid would have had a chance to take down USC in the Championship Game, had they been able to play.
21. Colorado (4-1)
The Buffs took a shot against Utah when so much was at stake. They’re not a Pac-12 Championship-caliber team this year, but they made the most of a weird season and created a lot of excitement they can build on going into next year. Their offense is good, and they can score on anyone in the conference.
22. Stanford (3-2)
23. Utah (2-2)
The Utes have a loss to USC in their opener, where they looked rusty, and a last-second loss to Washington. Other than that, they’ve looked great, and I think could really compete with a lot of teams ranked ahead of them now. With a strong run game and scary running back and tough defense, they sure look like the same old Utah.
24. Coastal Carolina (11-0)
25. BYU (10-1)
On The Edge: Louisiana, Tulsa, UCLA, Marshall, UCF
