Week One of the 2024 college football season is upon us, which means the hype is set to maximum.

The results from Week 0 may have shuffled evaluations of New Mexico, Nevada, and Hawai’i, but preseason perceptions for the rest of the teams still hold.

Here is how I view the Top 10 Teams in the West at the onset of the year.

Oregon Ducks Logo Pac-12

1. Oregon
The Ducks have all the pieces to compete for a National Championship.

Dillon Gabriel transferred in from Oklahoma and Oregon’s offensive line should once again be elite.

But the knock on UO’s program is that it can’t win the “big game.” Until they prove otherwise, any lofty preseason expectations for the Ducks should be taken with a grain of salt.

2. Utah
Cam Rising is back and the Utes are healthy. How long those two statements remain true will likely define Utah’s season.

The Big 12 Conference opens new doors for the program and presents an opportunity to establish itself as the top dog in the league.

But any early-season struggles could quickly change the perception of Utah Football, both internally and externally.

Arizona football Pac-12

3. Arizona
Brent Brennan did an excellent job managing Arizona’s roster. Only a few starters followed Jedd Fisch to Washington and Brennan’s staff added numerous weapons on both sides of the ball.

The Wildcats should have one of the top run games in the Big 12 and have arguably the most dynamic QB/WR duo in the nation.

A blowout victory over New Mexico to start the year should send a message.

4. Boise State
Ashton Jeanty might be the top running back in the country.

He led the nation last season in yards from scrimmage per game, was No. 3 nationally in all-purpose yards, and was the No. 1 running back in receiving yards with 569.

He does it all and single-handedly puts Boise State in contention for the Playoff. Combined with a defense that returns seven starters, the Broncos are a threat.

5. USC
The offseason addition of defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn was a game-changer.

Expectations are high for improvement on the defensive side of the ball, particularly with the arrival of star linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold.

USC has talent and an offensive system that’s strong enough to be successful in the Big Ten. But whether that translates to wins could come down to the play of quarterback Miller Moss.

6. California
Justin Wilcox has got it figured out.

Boasting the nation’s No. 17 Transfer Class, per 247Sports, and arguably the top running back in the ACC with Jaydn Ott, California is legitimate.

Quarterback Fernando Mendoza’s leadership is a powerful X-Factor that can’t be overlooked. As long as the Bears get some improvement out of their defense, Cal should surprise people this season.

7. Colorado
There may be culture problems in Boulder, but there’s no denying the talent on the roster. With the No. 8 Transfer Class, per 247Sports, there are no excuses for anything less than a six-win season.

Shedeur Sanders is one of the top quarterbacks in the country and should benefit from improvement along the offensive line.

Yet, if CU isn’t any better in the trenches, it’s going to be another long season.

Washington football pac-12

8. Washington
Will Rogers is set to cook in Jedd Fisch’s offense.

The system beats opponents before the snap even begins and all the quarterback has to do is find the open man. There’s always a checkdown available to a running back and the route schemes are elite.

Washington has the talent to exceed expectations in Fisch’s first year in Seattle.

9. UNLV
The Rebels are talented. With impact players on both sides of the ball, the key to the season will be the play of the quarterback.

The Week One matchup against Houston presents an opportunity to make a statement. Whoever ends up as the starting quarterback will have one of the top receivers in the nation to throw to in Ricky White III.

And with some of the best special teams players in the FBS, UNLV has potential.

10. Fresno State
Head Coach Jeff Tedford had to step down due to health issues over the offseason.

But star quarterback Mikey Keene returns to lead Fresno State along with star running back Malik Sherrod. Four starters are back along the offensive line as well as leading linebacker Malachi Langley.

Don’t overlook the Bulldogs in 2024.
