Winners and losers from the Mountain West and Pac-12 media-rights deals

By Chris Murray, Nevada Sports Net: The Mountain West and Pac-12 have announced their media-rights deals that will begin this summer, although the most important piece of information — the money! — has been omitted by both conferences. As I attempted to sort out the “winners” and “losers” from these deals, I’ll be honest — it’s mostly losers.

A combined MW/Pac-12/Gonzaga could have netted full members $10 million annually per school, given its dominance of West Coast time slots. Instead, the MW and Pac-12 split, costing both conferences leverage and leading to media-rights deals that must leave both leagues wishing they had more.

For the Pac-12, the initial estimates after raiding the MW were nowhere near matched. For the MW, being able to retain the five schools it lost to the Pac-12 could have led to a doubling of its media-rights money.

Instead, it took a haircut from the previous contract. It was a lose-lose situation. But nobody wants to read an article listing only losers, so we offer three winners, three losers and a neutral from the MW and Pac-12 agreements.
