This week brings a four-game slate in the Mountain West.

Boise State and Nevada will get the schedule started with a Friday night meeting in Reno.

The three Saturday games offer a trio of intriguing matchups.

Bronco Mendenhall will take his current squad back to his old stomping grounds.

San Diego State will head up to Fresno for a matchup with championship game ramifications between a couple of schools looking to make noise in the Mountain West before bolting to the Pac-12 next season.

And Colorado State and Wyoming will battle for the Bronze Boot in the Border War, but the Rams will be doing it with a different captain steering the ship.

Here is a look at the four-game slate for the MW this week.

Boise State is coming off a big win over UNLV that gave them the inside track on the conference championship game.

This week they look to get bowl eligible for the 27th consecutive season with win No. 6.

Last week, Dylan Riley ran for 201 yards on just 15 carries as he torched the Rebels. His seven runs this season of 30 yards or more are tied for the most in the nation.

Nevada has only allowed three runs this season of 30-plus, but the Pack have allowed 35 runs this season of 10-plus yards with an average of 4.22 yards per run.

This could be one that the Broncos backs find some space to run.

Nevada has done a pretty good job of limiting teams in the passing game this season, so the Broncos may lean on the ground attack.

The Wolf Pack has had a lot of problems moving the football this season. Nevada barely averages over 300 yards of offense per game and currently rank 128th in the nation in total offense.

The Boise State defense should have no problem putting the clamps down. Nevada is only scoring 15.6 points per game, the fourth-lowest scoring output in the nation.

The Broncos run away with this one, and the nation’s second-longest bowl streak will grow by one more year.

Call it the Bronco Mendenhall Bowl. The current Utah State Aggies coach heads to Albuquerque to face the Lobos of New Mexico, the squad he coached last season.

Both teams enter at 4-3 on the season, coming off wins a week ago. USU is 2-1 in conference play while UNM is 1-2 in league action.

The fact that both teams have a winning record is a rarity in this series.

This is just the fifth time in 31 meetings between the two schools in which both teams are above .500. The last such meeting came in 1964, when both teams were 3-1 and the Aggies left University Stadium with a 14-3 win.

Interestingly enough, that was the last game the Lobos would lose that season en route to a 9-2 season. USU would only win one more game that season to finish at 5-4-1.

This year’s version of the matchup features teams that have arrived at their four wins in a different manner.

Utah State is 38th in the nation in total offense while New Mexico is 86th in the nation.

The Lobos are not great on the defensive side of the ball, but have held their own at times.

The Aggies, on the other hand, have not stopped anyone, ranking 128th in the nation in total defense.

So, that 61-and-a-half points doesn’t look so bad.

Yes, plenty of points will be scored in this one, but the majority of them will be scored by the visiting team.

Bryson Barnes ranks either first or second in six different MW stat categories and is in the top-15 nationally in both passing TDs and rushing TDs. Look for him to have a big game.

USU gets the win in an entertaining matchup.

Line: San Diego State –3.5
Over/Under: 47.5

A pair of teams exceeding expectations to start 2025 do battle in this one.

Fresno State is off to a 5-2 start with a 2-1 conference record. San Diego State is 5-1 and 2-0 in conference play and already two games better than their final win total from 2024.

Both teams are coming off a bye, with Fresno State falling to Colorado State 49-10 two weeks ago in a loss that is going to become more inexplicable as the season goes on.

The Aztecs were on a four-game win streak prior to the week off, winning those games by an average score of 32.3-9.3.

San Diego State is a balanced football team. The defense is suffocating.

The 12.2 points per game allowed is the fifth-best mark in the country while the 259.7 yards surrendered per outing is ninth in the land.

The offense has scored 40+ in three of their six games.

The Bulldogs have a very good defense of their own, ranking 27 in the nation in yardage allowed, and are limiting opponents to just 23.7 points per game.

This contest could be a slug fest. And tight defensive showdowns often go to the team that makes fewer mistakes.

Turnovers could decide it, and the Aztecs have only turned it over twice this season, the third fewest in the nation. But they have only created five takeaways.

Fresno State has forced some turnovers—11 on the season—but have also given it away more than just about anyone in the nation with 14 turnovers lost.

In their two losses, the Bulldogs are minus-seven in the turnover department, while they are plus-four in the wins.

The Aztecs will get some takeaways and get the win in Fresno State’s Black Out game.

There is plenty at stake for Wyoming and Colorado State in the Border War.

While the conferences of the teams will change next year, thankfully the Bronze Boot will still be contested as a non-conference meeting through 2036.

Adding to the intrigue in this one is the fact that the Rams will take the field without Jay Norvell as head coach for the first time since 2021.

Tyson Summers is the interim head man for CSU, and we will see if the coaching change can provide an immediate spark as it has at a couple of other schools this season.

Wyoming has been plagued by slow starts in the first half this season, having been outscored by 42 points before half time.

Against Air Force last week, the Cowboys took a 7-6 lead into the locker room but failed to hang on to it.

The Pokes had no answer for the ground attack of the Falcons. This week, they will not be seeing a similar rushing attack.

CSU is coming off a loss to Hawai’i in which they only mustered 85 yards on the ground on 34 carries—which was obviously aided by six sacks and 35 negative yards on those sacks.

Wyoming is not an easy team to run against, the Air Force game notwithstanding, but they are extremely stout against the pass.

UW is second in the conference at stopping the pass and they could make the Ram offense one-dimensional, especially if CSU still has issues in pass protection.

I don’t think we will see lightning strike with this coaching change. Wyoming is the better team and will make more plays.

The Cowboys get the win and cover at home.
