The first week of the 2021-22 men’s basketball season has opened with the Pac-12 collecting a win in the best matchup of the opening week as UCLA knocked off Villanova.

It was the first non-conference meeting of top 5 programs in Pauley Pavilion since March 1, 1992, when No. 4 UCLA lost a 75-65 decision to No. 1 Duke.

Pac-12This time it was the No. 2 Bruins besting the No. 4 Wildcats in one of two Pac-12 games in the opening week involving an opponent from a Power Conference. The other was an Oregon State loss to Iowa State in Ames on Friday night.

The Conference will see two more such matchups in Week Two, when Stanford travels to Baylor on Saturday and Utah meets Boston College in the Sunshine Slam in Daytona, FL.

Another contest to look forward to in the coming week, while not a power conference matchup, pits Arizona State against San Diego State in Viejas Arena for a Thursday night game.

Overall, the Pac-12 combined for an 18-6 mark in Week One.
