Salaries for defensive coordinators have steadily risen over the past decade, and two new hires reset the market again this offseason. Tom Allen leaving Penn State for Clemson this offseason for a three-year, $6 million deal sparked a chain reaction that has redefined the coaching market forever as the Nittany Lions poached Jim Knowles from Ohio State with a historic deal.
A majority of the highest-paid coordinators have lived up to their big salaries. Five of the highest-paid DCs on this list finished the 2024 season with their units ranked top 10 nationally in scoring defense. A few ranked outside the top 10, including LSU DC Blake Baker and USC
