By Carter Bahns, 247Sports: Ohio State begins its national championship defense when the 2025 college football season kicks off, and the Buckeyes are among the perceived frontrunners to again hoist the College Football Playoff trophy at the end of the campaign.
They have been in pole position on the betting market all offseason, either all alone or in the co-favorite conversation with Texas, and would become the second back-to-back national champion of the decade if they live up to those expectations.
Consecutive national titles are not all that common in college football, and generally only one team per decade throughout the AP Poll era achieved the feat. There was even a 25-year stretch that spanned the entirety of the 1970s and 1980s in which no team reached the mountaintop in back-to-back years.
