UO & OSU Op-Ed: Resuming college sports safely marks welcome step forward

OregonLive: Six weeks ago, we voted with other Pac-12 university chancellors and presidents to pause intercollegiate athletics. We did so because our medical advisors did not believe we could protect student-athletes from the effects of COVID-19 and because Oregon and California regulations at the time did not allow athletic competition.

Much has changed since then, allowing both of us to join our conference colleagues in voting to resume football, basketball and winter sports.

Oregon State University President F. King Alexander and University of Oregon President Michael Schill write that the availability of daily and weekly testing, the change in guidance from state officials and other measures have helped them make the decision to resume sports with the rest of the Pac-12 conference.
