Stephen Vilardo’s 2023 Week 12 College Football Top 25

> It was a ho-hum week at the top of the rankings with big shakeups in the middle and at bottom

  By Stephen Vilardo, SuperWest Sports

November 13, 2023

It was a ho-hum week at the top of the rankings as the top teams all took care of things and James Franklin lost to a top-10 team—all pretty standard issue.

The big shakeups were with the middle to bottom half of the rankings. Teams just fell.

And even the teams on the outskirts looking in that I would have moved into my Top 25, well a few of them even fell by the wayside.

Two more weeks of the regular season and then Championship week is all that separates us from finding out our playoff teams.

And with that, here is my prediction of what the top 4 will look like on December 3rd:

1. Michigan
2. Georgia
3. Oregon
4. Florida State.

Ohio State is closing the gap to Michigan so look out.

But below are my rankings as of today—enjoy.

1. Georgia Bulldogs 10-0 (Last week: 1)

Last Week: Beat Mississippi 52-17

Georgia extended its school-record win streak to 27 straight games, the longest active streak in the nation. The Dawgs have 37 straight regular season wins.

Ole Miss seemed like a team that could keep it close, but they were not. Carson Beck continues to grasp the offense better each week and the Bulldogs continue to roll.

A trip to Knoxville is on deck and the Vols will be reeling from their loss this week. Will the rivalry prove worthy of the billing or prove to be a mere bump in the road for the Dawgs?

Next Week: at Tennessee

2. Michigan Wolverines 10-0 (2)

Last Week: Won at Penn State 24-15

Penn State scored double figures on Michigan, but the Wolverines still came away with the win. Jim Harbaugh may not have been on the sideline, but Michigan continued to roll.

The Wolverines have outscored their foes 380-72 this season. Michigan has won 22 consecutive Big Ten games, the longest active conference win streak in the nation, and the longest in Michigan history.

UM has now won 10 consecutive road Big Ten games. JJ McCarty only had to attempt eight passes against PSU, and he completed seven of them.

Next Week: at Maryland

3. Ohio State Buckeyes 10-0 (4)

Last Week: Beat Michigan State 38-3

The Buckeye defense continues to look like a legitimate championship-caliber defense. The listless Spartans were no match for OSU.

Kyle McCord is looking better and better each week, and he threw for 335 against MSU.

Now, let’s be honest: This is not a good Michigan State team, and at this point, they are just going through the motions. Nonetheless, we saw a dominant performance from Ohio State.

Minnesota is the last hurdle before the first regular-season “playoff” game in Ann Arbor.

Next Week: vs Minnesota

4. Florida State Seminoles 10-0 (3)

Last Week: Beat Miami 27-20

Florida State extended its win streak to 16 and polished off a perfect ACC season.

The Seminoles had a tough time putting away their rivals as they were outgained on the day by the Hurricanes.

FSU Jordan Travis took care of the football and did enough through the air to pick up the win.

Mike Norvell is 22-5 in November as a head coach, including 10-3 at home.

Next Week: vs North Alabama

5. Washington Huskies 10-0 (5)

Last Week: Beat Utah 35-28

Washington has now won 17 straight games, the second-longest streak in the nation. The Huskies are 10-0 for just the second time ever, the other being their 12-0 1991 National Championship season.

Washington football pac-12Rome Odunze went over 1000 yards for the season in the win over Utah, becoming the second player in Washington history to do so in his career.

Kalen DeBoer is now 21-2 at UW, with a 13-0 mark at home. Michael Penix is 33-7 in his career as a starter.

Next Week: at Oregon State

6. Oregon Ducks 9-1 (6)

Last Week: Beat USC 36-27

Bo Nix got rolling early and often. The Heisman frontrunner had a huge game against USC. And while Nix was chewing up the Trojans it wasn’t like Bucky Irving was taking the night off.

Oregon Ducks Logo Pac-12Oregon was able to move the ball at will against the Trojans. USC was no match and on defense the Ducks were able to neutralize the vaunted USC offense.

This is a balanced championship-ready squad.

Next Week: at Arizona State

7. Texas Longhorns 9-1 (8)

Last Week: Won at TCU 29-26

The Longhorns have opened 9-1 to start a season for the first time since opening 2009 at 13-0.

Texas built a lead on the Horned Frogs and let TCU climb back in this one. Quinn Ewers returned and looked good as he came back from injury.

The Longhorns were outscored 20-3 in the fourth quarter but hung on to survive. When they needed plays late to seal the win Ewers and Adonai Mitchell were able to deliver them and lock up the win.

Next Week: at Iowa State

8. Alabama Crimson Tide 9-1 (9)

Last Week: Won at Kentucky 49-21

Jalen Milroe accounted for six touchdowns in the win over Kentucky, matching the most ever in a single game by an Alabama player.

Milroe has continued to get better as the season has gone on and so has the Crimson Tide.

In the last two games, Milroe has been accountable for 644 total yards and 10 total touchdowns which include seven on the ground and three through the air.

Alabama has now clinched a spot in the SEC title game.

Next Week: vs Chattanooga

9. Penn State Nittany Lions 8-2 (7)

Last Week: Lost to Michigan 24-15

James Franklin was outcoached by a team without a head coach…a little tongue in cheek, but the fact is, with this loss to Michigan, Franklin is now 1-12 at Penn State against Top 5 opponents.

Moreover, Franklin’s teams are now 3-17 against Top 10 opponents. This was to be the year for the Nittany Lions to take the next step, but they did not do that.

Penn State is now 1-10 in their last 10 games against teams ranked in the Top 10 in the nation.

Next Week: vs Rutgers

10. Oklahoma Sooners 8-2 (11)

Last Week: Beat West Virginia 59-20

The Sooners got back on track with a win over West Virginia. Dillon Gabriel shined as he threw for 423 and five TD passes, and ran for 50 and three more scores.

The eight TDs Gabriel was responsible for set a new Oklahoma single-game record. Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield were the prior holders of the mark with seven.

Drake Stoops has 22 catches for 298 yards and four touchdowns over the past two games.

Defensively, the return of Danny Stutsman was evident as the Sooners played much better on that side of the ball than they did last week,

Next Week: at BYU

11. Oregon State Beavers 8-2 (12)

Last Week: Beat Stanford 62-17

Oregon State’s offense took off against the Cardinal as they improved to 8-2 for the first time since 2012.

The Beaver offense produced a season-high 598 yards. Damien Martinez tied an Oregon State single-game record with four rushing touchdowns.

The OSU defense intercepted four passes for the first time since 2016 against Idaho State.

Next Week: vs Washington

12. Louisville Cardinals 9-1 (15)

Last Week: Beat Virginia 31-24

Louisville has now won 11 straight games at home, tied for the second longest in program history. The Cardinals survived Virginia and, in doing so, improved to 6-1 in ACC play.

The Cards can clinch a spot in the ACC Championship game with a win at Miami. The inexplicable loss to Pitt is growing larger as the wins for U of L continue.

A 10-0 record would have looked nice but there is still a lot on the table for the Cards to take hold of this season.

Next Week: at Miami

13. Missouri Tigers 8-2 (16)

Last Week: Beat Tennessee 36-7

The concern outside of the Mizzou program was whether the loss to Georgia would carry over and beat them twice. The Tigers were focused and looked sharp against the Vols.

Cody Schrader had 205 yards on the ground and 116 receiving. His 321 total yards were the second most in a single game in Mizzou history.

Tennessee was 14th in the nation against the run allowing 97.5 per game, and Missouri put up 255 on them.

Next Week: vs Florida

14. Ole Miss Rebels 8-2 (10)

Last Week: Lost at Georgia 52-17

The Ole Miss offense sputtered, and the defense struggled Saturday night in Athens, but that tends to happen on Saturdays in Athens to visiting teams.

Not much of anything went right for the Rebels in this one, especially after the break.

Jaxson Dart was inefficient and then had to leave with an injury. The defense offered little to slow down Georgia.

Next Week: vs Louisiana Monroe

15. LSU Tigers 7-3 (17)

Last Week: Beat Florida 52-35

The 52 points scored by the Tigers were the most ever scored by LSU against Florida.

Jayden Daniels put on a display. (If it weren’t for Bo Nix, I’d say Daniels may have locked up the Heisman)

Daniels had 606 yards of offense—606! He became the first player in FBS history with at least 350 yards passing and 200 yards rushing in the same game.

Daniels became the only player in NCAA FBS history to amass 12,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards in a career—video game numbers at their finest. And Georgia State is next up.

Next Week: vs Georgia State

16. Utah Utes 7-3 (13)

Last Week: Lost at Washington 35-28

The Utes took a four-point lead into the half but were outscored by Washington 11-0 in the second half.

This was the first time this season the Utes lost a game they led at the midway point.

Utah threw for a season-high 267 yards against UW.

Next Week: at Arizona

17. Kansas Jayhawks 7-3 (14)

Last Week: Lost to Texas Tech 16-13

Kansas dug a hole they could not get out of against the Red Raiders.

Kansas trailed 13-0 entering the fourth quarter and came back to tie it up at 13-13 with 0:26 remaining in the game before Tech put together the winning drive.

The Sunflower State showdown is next up and knocking off KSU and picking up an eighth win of the season would be sweet for KU.

Next Week: vs Kansas State

18. Tulane Green Wave 9-1 (18)

Last Week: Beat Tulsa 24-22

Michael Pratt has thrown a TD pass in 42 of his 43 career games and has thrown multiple TDs in 30 of those games.

The Green Wave are now 21-3 since the start of 2022 trailing only Georgia (25) and Michigan (22) for the most wins during that span. Tulane has not played their best in the last two weeks, but has still gotten wins.

The Green Wave are getting the best from every opponent, and as long as they keep winning the close margins, they cannot be overlooked.

Next Week: vs FAU

19. James Madison 10-0 (20)

Last Week: Beat UConn 44-6

James Madison has now won 13 straight games.

Jordan McCloud threw for a career-high 457 yards, and his 453 total yards of offense were the fifth most in JMU history. The Dukes are 10-0 on the season.

Note to the NCAA: Let this team play for a conference championship and in a bowl game!

Next Week: vs App State

20. Arizona Wildcats 7-3 (22)

Last Week: Won at Colorado 34-31

The Wildcats have won four consecutive games, three of them coming against ranked opponents. This is the longest win streak for the program since winning four in a row in 2017.

Arizona football Pac-12The last time they had a five-game win streak was when they opened 5-0 in 2014 under Rich Rodriguez.

At 7-3, the Cats are off to their best 10-game start since 2017.

Next Week: vs Utah

21. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 7-3 (23)

Last Week: Bye

The Fighting Irish are coming off their bye after suffering a loss at Clemson the last time they took the field.

With the three losses, Notre Dame will not be playing in a New Year’s Six bowl game.

The final two games are Wake at home and a trip to Stanford to end the regular season. Both of those should be wins and get the Irish set up with nine wins and a solid bowl bid.

Next Week: vs Wake Forest

22. Liberty Flames 10-0 (24)

Last Week: Beat Old Dominion 38-10

Liberty has clinched a date in the Conference USA Championship game as they ran their record to 10-0 on the year.

The Flames came into the game second in the nation in rushing and went over 200 yards on the ground for the fifth consecutive game and the ninth time this season.

Next Week: vs UMass

23. Toledo 9-1 (NR)

Last Week: Beat Eastern Michigan 49-23

I had the Rockets ranked in the preseason, they fell to Illinois in their season opener and I took them out of the rankings. All Toledo has done since then is win football games.

So as they head to Bowling Green for the Battle of I-75 you have to think I may have thrown the jinx on them.

The fact is that this is a very good Toledo team and they should survive the voodoo that I do next week…or this week it is “MACtion,” so it’s on a Tuesday.

Next Week: at Bowling Green

24. North Carolina Tar Heels 8-2 (NR)

Last Week: Beat Duke 47-45 in OT

The Tar Heels are minus-32 in the fourth quarter of their last four ACC games. They survived a scare from the Blue Devils as Drake Maye pulled one out of his hat.

The UNC defense that was so tough through their unbeaten start has struggled recently and did so again on Saturday. The defense did come up with three key sacks against Duke.

UNC has scored 30+ points in 14 of their last 18 games and has reached 40+ in seven of their 10 games this season.

Next Week: at Clemson

25. Tennessee Volunteers 7-3 (19)

Last Week: Lost at Missouri 36-7

Tennessee failed to get a big win on the road and just got run over by Missouri.

The Tigers literally ran over them to the tune of 255 on the ground.

Joe Milton threw a TD pass in his 14th straight game the third-longest streak in UT history.

Next Week: vs Georgia

Dropped out: Oklahoma State, Air Force
