Hummer: College football has cannibalized itself

By Chris Hummer, 247Sports: There’s an old fable, “The Scorpion and the Frog,” that tells the story of frog who agrees to help a scorpion reach the other side of a river. The frog is hesitant at first, because it doesn’t want to be stung. But it ultimately agrees because the scorpion can’t swim, and a mid-crossing sting would doom them both.

Halfway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway. The scorpion couldn’t fight its nature even when it worked against its best interest.

College football has cannibalized itself

For a long time, college football was an imperfect escape for fans and a driver of revenue for so many universities and college towns cross the country. Its next era will see the big schools continue to suffocate the smaller schools, even the ones who think they might be safe for now.
