Early clues emerging about Gary Patterson’s USC defense this spring

By R.J. Abeytia, USCFootball.com: After two spring practices, we’re slowly picking up the puzzle pieces USC’s players and coaches are dropping about Gary Patterson’s defense. It won’t be complete until the Trojans hit United Airlines Field inside the Coliseum Aug. 29 to play San Jose State. We know the Trojan defense must level up for USC to make the College Football Playoff and to become a threat to win it in the years to come.

In terms of numbers, we know from safeties coach Paul Gonzales the Trojans want to level up in the red zone and in terms of takeaways. We’re also pretty sure USC will deploy some version of Patterson’s favored base 4-2-5 defense.
