Stanford men’s basketball faces Chicago State today in an odd nonconference matchup in the middle of January.
The game plays the role of a tune-up before Jerod Haase’s team faces California on Saturday.
I preview the game here and my pick appears at the bottom.
Chicago State at Stanford

Harrison Ingram was more efficient in the Tree’s victories over the Oregon schools last week, going 7-for-14 from the field including 4-for-9 from deep.
The sophomore had a combined 16 rebounds and 11 assists in the two games, as well, resulting in a far more polished Cardinal offense.
If Ingram continues production on that level for the remainder of the year, Haase’s group will be a much more dangerous team.
Matched up with the Cougars, the Tree face a team seasoned to playing on the road. Chicago State has played just four home games all year and the independent program is 1-16 away from home.
Led by Wesley Cardet Jr, Chicago State is a guard-dominant team that lacks size. Forward Arol Kacuol is the lone big that sees consistent minutes.
Yet, Kacuol only averages 2.2 points per game, sees the floor just 11.6 minutes per night, and is only 6-foot-9. Taeyon Neal is an option, but the true center has only played in four games this season.
That leaves a gaping flaw in the paint for Stanford to exploit.
Maxime Raynaud could dominate and figures to get fed the ball almost every possession. There is nobody on Chicago State’s roster to effectively guard him and the French sophomore could realistically score 20 points or more.
Facing such a nonexistent frontcourt, look for the Cardinal to dominate the glass and have a wide margin in points in the paint.
Unless the Cougars are hot from three, the game should turn into a blowout by the end of the first half.
