By Isaac Trotter, 247Sports: Championships are often won thanks to roster-building decisions that get made right now in war rooms throughout college basketball. Florida and Houston advanced to Monday’s National Championship game largely due to winning the Retention Game last spring.
Houston convinced seven key rotation pieces to run it back, headlined by LJ Cryer, Emanuel Sharp, JoJo Tugler and J’Wan Roberts. It won the Big 12 and made the National Championship game. Florida was the same way. It kept Walter Clayton Jr., Will Richard, Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh and Denzel Aberdeen, complemented those five guys in the portal, and transformed into a dominant team.
Building a winner can look different for everybody because there are extra avenues to tap into. The international market has skyrocketed. The portal has more star power than ever before. The incoming class of 2025 has some absolute superstars at the top of the food chain.
