By Greg Witter, Cougfan.com: Twenty-five years ago today, Washington State’s Cougars played the game that would launch them on a path to the Rose Bowl and an exalted place in Palouse lore.
It was a 37-34 nail-biter over UCLA, and if you ask Coug fans who were around at the time about the 1997 season opener, nine of out ten will begin the conversation with this phrase: the goal-line stand.  And that phrase quickly will be followed by one name: Leon Bender.
