Chaos reigned in College Football last weekend.
But out West, Oregon crushed Michigan State to hold steady as the region’s top team.
Other noteworthy results included Arizona State beating Kansas, Washington upsetting Michigan, and UNLV losing to Syracuse.
So, I went back to the drawing board to re-rank the programs. Here’s how I view the Top 10 Teams in the West heading into Week Seven.
1. Oregon (2-0, 5-0) ◄►
The Ducks handled Michigan State with relative ease. The 31-10 victory was a solid first step in a difficult stretch of the schedule, underscoring the foundational strength of Oregon’s program.
Physicality in the trenches set UO apart in the Pac-12 era and that has translated well to the Big Ten.
2. BYU (2-0, 5-0) ◄►
FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff show announced that it is coming to Provo for this week’s game with Arizona. The eyes of the College Football world will be on the Cougars as they seek to remain undefeated.
It goes without saying, but BYU’s transition to the Big 12 has forever altered the trajectory of the program.
3. Utah (1-1, 4-1) ◄►
If any team needed a bye week, it was Utah.Arizona losing to Texas Tech paints the loss to the Wildcats in an even worse light. There’s no more room for error.
The season is on the line this week at Arizona State.
4. Boise State (1-0, 4-1) ▲1
The Broncos continue to prove why they are one of the favorites to make the College Football Playoff.Averaging 50.6 points per game, Boise State leads the nation in scoring offense.
Ashton Jeanty is the Heisman frontrunner and the remainder of the schedule is favorable.
5. USC (1-2, 3-2) ▼1
Lincoln Riley and the Trojans have fundamental problems in the Big Ten.The program doesn’t have the offensive and defensive lines to compete in their new league.
There’s no denying the skill players USC has on its roster. But this is a new type of football that SC is not built for.
At least not yet.
6. Colorado (2-0, 4-1) ▲3
Coach Prime and the Buffs are on a three-game winning streak as they host No. 18 Kansas State this week. The CU defense used its bye week to prepare for Avery Johnson and should be well-prepared to face KSU.
The momentum around the program might be at its highest level since Sanders took over.
7. UNLV (1-0, 4-1) ▼2
The Rebels lost their first game of the season with a disappointing performance against Syracuse. The defeat was unexpected and might have eliminated UNLV from Playoff contention.
Still, the season is not over and the momentum can be regained.
It’s a bit of a reset on the year and a convincing win at Utah State is needed.
8. Arizona State (1-1, 4-1) ▲2
Credit Kenny Dillingham and the Arizona State players for finding a way to beat Kansas.A larger margin of victory may have been expected, but a win is a win and you take them however they come.
Now, it’s on to Utah for what feels like a pivotal moment in the Dillingham era.
9. Washington State (4-1) ▲NR
The Cougs had a bye week and are a beneficiary of the chaos around the country. The win over Washington looks even better after the Dawgs beat Michigan, and the loss to Boise State appears more reasonable after the Broncos throttled Utah State.
But Wazzu must bounce back against Fresno State this week to keep the season alive.
10. Washington (2-1, 4-2) ▲NR
Jedd Fisch got his first signature win at Washington. Not many expected the Dawgs to get the job done and it changes the perception of the season.
But the remaining schedule is very difficult, featuring four opponents ranked in the Top 25 plus a trip to Iowa. The path to bowl eligibility is steep.
