19 of past 21 national champions were ranked among AP preseason Top 7 teams

By Brett McMurphy, On3 Sports: Congrats, Texas on earning the school’s first No. 1 preseason Associated Press poll ranking. Hook ‘em and hang the banner now! That’s because history says there won’t be a Longhorns championship in January.

Of the past 21 preseason No. 1 AP ranked teams, 19 failed to win the national title. The last to do so was Alabama in 2017.
