By Chip Patterson, CBS Sports: As we gather with family and friends this holiday weekend to celebrate the 4th of July, it is natural to reflect on American history over the decades. And while college football was not up and running when the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the sport has been undeniably American since its founding in the late 19th century.
In fact, when you consider its association with universities, the involvement of politicians and the way college football has continued to reflect our nation’s culture, you could argue that college football is the most American sport we have.
