New hires must not only build towards the future but also re-recruit much of their own rosters and find immediate replacements for the players who leave amid the changes in leadership. Acquiring instant-impact help from the portal is critical to Year 1 success, and the health of a coach’s debut recruiting class often sets the tone for the seasons to come.
The 2024 coaching carousel brought new blood to some of the biggest programs in the sport. Alabama selected Kalen DeBoer as the heir to Nick Saban, while Michigan promoted Sherrone Moore to replace Jim Harbaugh and Texas A&M turned to Mike Elko after it fired Jimbo Fisher. Those monumental moves are just three of the 14 power conference coaching changes.
