Phil Knight’s UO donations push $1 billion mark with Hayward field project

By Jeff Manning, OregonLive: Phil Knight’s contributions have flowed into the University of Oregon in increments of tens of millions, even hundreds of millions of dollars.

And now, with the completion of a rebuilt Hayward Field track stadium in Eugene, the billionaire’s total donations are approaching the $1 billion mark.

Replacing venerable Hayward Field in Eugene was plenty controversial. But Phil Knight was convinced it was the right thing to do and contributed the bulk of the $270 million cost. It is another in a long list of high-dollar gifts the billionaire Nike founder has made.
