By Erik Skopil, Duck Territory:Â A defensive player has not won the Heisman Trophy in nearly 30 years.
The last player other than a quarterback, running back or wide receiver who took home the sport’s top award was Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson in 1997. Since then, 17 quarterbacks have taken the honor, five running backs have won and so has one wide receiver (Alabama’s DeVonta Smith this past season).
