Duck Territory: Oregon did not have many true quarterback battles in the 2010s. It simply wasn’t a requirement most years. With players like Darron Thomas, Marcus Mariota and Justin Herbert starting for the majority of the seasons, the need to find new starters was infrequent.
Yet, this spring will be the second consecutive in which the Ducks will be in search of a new starter. Tyler Shough got the upper-hand a year ago over Anthony Brown to replace Herbert, but despite starting all seven games 2020, he is now Lubbock in. Even if Shough had returned for 2021, Mario Cristobal already made it clear that an “open competition” would take place.
