How BYU's bet on player development has Cougars in CFP contention atop Big 12

By Shehan Jeyarajah, CBS Sports: Trying to describe BYU’s 8-0 start is a tough task. The Cougars have a stout defense but not one of the best in the Big 12. The offensive metrics have improved from last season thanks to a breakout year from quarterback Jake Retzlaff, but they’re nowhere close to the top of the conference. No BYU player lands within the top 100 in the CBS Sports 2025 NFL Draft Prospect Rankings.

“It’s not like one individual person has been just spectacular every single game,” defensive lineman Tyler Batty told CBS Sports. “It’s not like we have an Ashton Jeanty on our team where we can hand him the rock and he’s just gonna get 200 yards and break 1,000 tackles.”
