For the first time since 2018, the Washington State football team sits at 7-1 with an incredible 29-26 triumph over San Diego State at a near-unplayable grass field in San Diego that quarterback John Mateer‘s jersey will need to be double-soaked for the amount of stains that ended up on the clean white top, white and black helmet.
The third-year player in the Palouse and first-year starter was responsible for all 29 points the Cougs, including a trick play two-point reception that had a bobbled handoff, but Mateer was so wide open it didn’t matter. With teams such as Illinois, Navy, Missouri and Vanderbilt all losing on Saturday — and they all are near the bottom of the Associated Press top-25 — if Wazzu isn’t ranked come Sunday morning, most of the voters should be stripped of the vote.
