OregonLive: Timothy DeRuyter was in the eighth grade, warming up for a CYO basketball game when his coach pulled him aside. DeRuyter, one of eight children in his family, was led out of the gym and taken to the church where he was given the worst news of his young life.
“Your dad,” the coach said, “was shot.”
