There’s nothing better than College Football.
The matchup between Oregon and Ohio State had been circled since the offseason and the game didn’t disappoint. It was one of the biggest wins in program history.
But looking around at the rest of the teams on the West Coast, it was a bit of an ugly weekend.
Utah’s demise was capstoned by Arizona State, Washington got crushed by Iowa, and California lost again.
Here’s how I view the Top 10 Teams in the West heading into Week Eight.
1. Oregon (3-0, 6-0) ◄►
Wins like that are the reason Oregon joined the Big Ten.The Ducks have been struggling to break through to the proverbial “next level” but may have finally done so. With strong offensive and defensive lines, UO is built to succeed in its new league.
Moving forward, it’s all about maintaining the elite level of play.
2. BYU (3-0, 6-0) ◄►
The Cougars dominated Arizona in Provo. BYU’s defense forced multiple turnovers and its offense took advantage of short fields.Sitting at the top of the Big 12 standings, BYU is in position to make the Playoff.
The program’s progress in the second year of the Conference is impressive.
3. Boise State (2-0, 5-1) ▲1
It was a business trip to the Islands of Hawaii. The Broncos did what they needed to do and left with a win.Ashton Jeanty remains the favorite to win the Heisman and the buzz around the team continues to grow.
In some ways, Boise State’s success is linked to Oregon’s, so the Broncos are in a strong position to make the Playoffs.
4. Arizona State (2-1, 5-1) ▲4
Kenny Dillingham secured the first signature win of his coaching career.Arizona State’s first victory over a Top 25 team since the 2022 season played out on a national stage.
With a 2-1 record in Big 12 play, the auto-bid to the Playoff is still possible.
5. UNLV (2-0, 5-1) ▲2
The Rebels made a statement in the first half against Utah State.Jumping out to a 41 to 7 lead, the hangover from the Syracuse loss was put to bed quickly.
Facing Oregon State on the road this week, UNLV has an opportunity to put itself back on track for a shot at the Playoff.
6. Washington State (5-1) ▲3
It might not have been pretty, but Washington State got the job done on the road against Fresno State.Wins like that are what keep programs moving forward.
A defeat would have been a disaster and the “W” keeps the chances of making the Playoff alive.
7. Utah (1-2, 4-2) ▼4
If Utah didn’t already know the dynasty was over, the defeat on the road to Arizona State was the final word. It’s not just that the Utes lost. It was how they lost.
Cam Rising looked like he should medically retire from football and the defense has lost its identity.
8. USC (1-3, 3-3) ▼3
Lincoln Riley is officially on the hot seat. The playbook for success in the Big Ten includes strong lines on both sides of the ball. But USC has struggled for years in that department.
The Trojans will underperform until they fix those issues or hire a new coach.
9. Colorado (2-1, 4-2) ▼3
Injuries have become an issue for Colorado. But even with multiple key players going down, the Buffs still have the depth to compete in the Big 12. That’s a testament to Coach Prime’s recruiting and indicates the program’s strength.
Still, CU should have found a way to beat Kansas State.
10. California (0-3, 3-3) ▲NR
The Bears came up short against Pitt on the road. But there probably isn’t a better 3-3 team in the country than Cal.Just a few plays away from being 6-0, Justin Wilcox has the personnel to turn the season around.
California’s three losses have been by a combined eight points and the program is knocking on the door.
