The rich get richer.
Oregon, BYU, and Boise State posted respectable wins that further distinguished themselves from the other teams on the West Coast.
But Colorado continues to show that they belong in the conversation. And despite struggling to beat San Diego State, Washington State continues to keep itself in the mix.
Here’s how I view the Top 10 Teams in the West heading into Week 10.
1. Oregon (5-0, 8-0) ◄►
The Ducks sent a message with a blowout victory over then No. 20 Illinois. The 29-point win reinforces the perception that Oregon is the top team in the nation.
The path to the National Championship Game is clear and the program is hitting on all cylinders.
2. BYU (5-0, 8-0) ◄►
There were zero reasons why UCF should have been favored over BYU last week. But Kalani Sitake’s group might have used the disrespect as motivation and the team delivered the result.
The Cougars have a favorable schedule to finish the regular season and it’s reasonable to expect them to win out.
3. Boise State (3-0, 6-1) ◄►
With the eyes of the College Football world watching, Boise State secured one of the most important conference victories in program history. The Playoff is now well within reach.
The Broncos are the favorites from the Group of 5 and the remaining schedule is favorable.
4. Colorado (4-1, 6-2) ▲1
Colorado continues to rise in the Big 12.The win over Cincinnati was monumental in the context of the Conference’s pecking order. It established CU as one of the league’s elite teams and the Playoff now becomes a possibility.
Considering where the program was before Deion Sanders took over, the rise has been meteoric.
5. Washington State (7-1) ▲1
Where would Washington State be without John Mateer? The quarterback led the Cougars to a come from behind victory on the road at San Diego State. The struggles against the Aztecs were questionable, but winning on the road is never easy.
Wazzu’s resume is respectable, yet the Playoff is slipping out of reach.
6. UNLV (2-1, 6-2) ▼2
The Rebels dropped an opportunity last Friday. The Playoff was up for grabs and mistakes cost them the game. But there’s still plenty left to play for. All UNLV can do now is win out and focus on itself.
The coaching staff knows it. And the players know it. How they respond against Hawaii after this week’s bye will say a lot.
7. Arizona State (2-2, 5-2) ◄►
Coming off a bye week, Arizona State finds itself in a favorable position. The Sun Devils are 5-2 and undefeated at home.
This week’s matchup against Oklahoma State will be a clear measuring stick of where the program stands in the new Big 12. A defeat to the Cowboys would be damaging.
8. Fresno State (3-1, 5-3) ▲1
If there were any questions about whether or not Fresno State belonged on this list, they were answered against San Jose State. The Bulldogs crushed the Spartans to secure the Valley Trophy.
Still, without a signature win on their resume, unknowns remain regarding the team’s ceiling.
9. California (0-4, 4-4) ▲NR
Now, that was a “get right” game.If there was anybody doubting the difference in strength between the ACC and the Pac-12, those doubts were put to bed by Cal on Saturday.
The Bears embarrassed Oregon State, sending the former conference mate off with a direct message: Welcome to the new world of College Football.
10. USC (2-4, 4-4) ▲NR
Lincoln Riley and the Trojans got back on the right track with a relatively easy win over Rutgers. There was a clear talent disparity on the field, giving some insight into where USC sits in the new Big Ten.
But the relative momentum would be completely wasted if SC loses to Washington this week.
